The Last Christmas

A little foreground – This was an exercise in the class. We were given an object and were expected to write a short story including that. This was written about 10 days back in an hours time. Right now I have just edited it and have changed the ending. Images contain some text of the story, don’t skip it. Thanks!

~~~’~,<@ The Last Christmas @>,~’~~~
It was 24th December and the city was already in a Christmas mood. Shankar was called in the evening to transfer the confidential information in his possession to new occupant. He was asked to complete the task as quickly as the blink of an eye. Though he knew the urgency, but he had no plans to postpone his plans for the evening.
Shankar was 28, unmarried and had no girlfriend. He knew that he is not the kind of guy who would stick to one girl for the rest of his life. Hence, he found the idea of visiting the red light areas more appealing than a girl friend. This Christmas Eve was planned with Reva, a girl he noticed last time when he hired Poonam. It was Reva, who occupied his mind while he was involved in ‘the act’ with Poonam. He had been waiting for the moment to be in her arms, he wanted to be familiar with her smell, desired to run his fingers through her long and thick textured hair.
Leaving the confidential information at home was not safe, so he took the data along with him on his ‘date’. Same vibrant eyes that he had been dreaming of, greeted him in a small room. There was large bed for two which looked quite old as it required some varnish, room was adorned with yellow curtains which looked dirty but were resembling the colour of the bed cover, the fan was making a noise as it moved slowly providing no respite from the humidity, green painted walls hung some frames of old tribal women with their children, there was nothing exciting about the room with poor lighting, except Reva! He could not wait to feel the softness of her lips, with his. The door was closed after a while, which made the room even more dark. He switched on all available lights in the room during the intense moments of passion to see enough of her till their next meeting. Shankar had spent all of his month’s savings on Reva, he knew that it would take at least a month to see her again.
It was past one in the night; Shankar was walking alone after parking his vehicle at Kalyan Junction. He always did that to avoid driving in narrow lanes of Kalyan. While walking, he recalled the moment of wishing Reva a very ‘Happy’ Christmas. She had laughed too, as she replied with a ‘Merry’ Christmas.
The silent street that Shankar walked suddenly became noisy with the sound of few more footsteps. He could not get rid of it even when he took some quick and strange turns. He looked in the side mirror of a car parked alongside. Two men were following him. Though the faces were covered, but he knew who they were and what they wanted. Shankar began to run and found his way to a nearby cyber cafe. Opening the locked door was as easy as putting the melted butter on a bread. He heard footsteps just outside the shop; there were voices calling more people. Shankar knew he had few minutes to act.
In a couple of minutes, they found their way inside the shop. They caught hold of Shankar; he was beaten up in anticipation to fetch the confidential information. Shankar knew that it was his fault that he postponed the assigned work in spite of its urgency. But maybe it was love that all he could think of was Reva and the evening spent with her, even when the blood was gushing out of his unrecognised veins. It was this realization which made him bargain for his life in exchange of the confidential information. They agreed! Shankar took out the CD from his shirt’s pocket and handed it over to them.
Next day’s newspaper carried a headline
Few days passed by, news channels and news papers got new headlines to share. On New Year’s Eve, Sheena was busy in the kitchen when she heard the ring of the doorbell. She opened the door to a courier boy. She found a letter and a pen drive when she opened the packet.
Are rules meant to be broken?
He opened his eyes and found himself at a new place; it wasn’t his bedroom he woke up to. He felt sick with the smell of medicines, tonics and phenyl in the hospital. He was going back to sleep. His head was spinning, just like an old beige fan at the ceiling. “It must have been white at some point”, he thought to himself. Trying to divert the mind, he looked around. It was just like those hospital rooms they show in movies. Dim light adorn the room which had light yellow paint, worn out from some corners of the wall. His was the only bed in the room, white colored iron bed with white bed cover. A table next to him had a glass n jug of water along with some papers. Curious to find out how he managed to come to this place he extended to pick them up. Suddenly wind blew the dirty gray curtains of the large window in the room. All the papers went into different directions in the room. He immediately tried to get up. As soon as he stood on his feet he fell down. He was weak.
His bruises hurt. There was some injury at head which was bandaged. His back was hurting too, there were some open wounds on legs and hands which were clearly visible on his fair skin. He tried hard to recall what had happened with him but could not. The 5’8″ well built figure climbed back on the bed and settled there. After taking a few deep breathes full of hospital fragrance, he fell asleep.
It was 15th February; cupid with his bow and arrow was still out for his hunt. Kabir had a reason to celebrate with his friends. Riah, who he was pursuing since 10th standard, had finally said “Yes” in 12th. Kabir Singhal, was the only son of a leading businessman Ajay Singhal; who is said to get the ticket to parliament soon. Kabir was a copy of his father, but had some traits of his mother too whom he had met only in pictures. She passed away when he was a year old. Kabir was now 16. Thanks to his routine of participating in almost every sport, he has got an athletes’’ body. Slightly long black curly hair which can be tied up. Fair skin was possessed through his mother. Coal black eyes and thick eyebrows, which when raised created 3 lines on the forehead. Lean nose, his family trademark resting upon the most kissable lips in school. His moustache had begun to show up. There was a change in voice too. Kabir was well known for his witty responses which often left girls speechless. Every girl had a crush on him, but he was made for Riah. This day was special, so the celebration needed to be special too. Kabir asked the driver to get a bottle of alcohol for him and his friends. He tried a sip or two with dad, but now at the verge of being in a relationship he felt grown up. They drank through the evening. None of them had hard drinks in the absence of parents before. They dint realize when it was more than enough for them. It was 9 in the night when kabir asked the driver for the car keys. He handed over a couple of hundreds to him asking him not to inform his dad. Kabir did this quite often, but this time it was special. He was drunk. And probably high on power too. There were 5 kids in the car, one was driving.
70kms on Delhi roads was not a desirable speed by a drunken teen ager. It proved lethal as the car got out of control while on a flyover and broke the railing to crash down on the pavement.
As the car hit the ground, Kabir woke up from his sleep in the hospital room. Sweat was all over his face and he was frightened. He looked at the calendar on the front wall. It was showing July as the current month. “July?? How can this be possible?”, he questioned himself. “I had my board exams in March, what happened to them?”. Unable to find the answers, kabir screamed calling out for his dad. A nurse entered the room and ran back to call the doctor. A doctor with few attendants came running. Kabir enquired about his father. “We have informed him, he would be here in a while”, said the doctor. He examined kabir and asked him to calm down. Of course he dint. Kabir’s father came in sight in about 15min. His eyes were filled with tears when he heard “dad” from Kabir’s mouth. He hugged him and kissed his forehead. So overwhelmed to see him talking that he couldn’t pay attention to Kabir’s questions. And when he did, a sudden sadness gripped him. Kabir sensed it and insisted him to share what happened. “Why do kids question parents intentions? All we want is our child’s safety” and father broke into tears again. Kabir sat on the bed numb after hearing the incident. The car landed on a beggar sleeping on the pavement, killing him on the spot. There were 5 kids in the car. The one at the front seat was declared brought dead along with the one sitting behind at the back seat. The one who was sitting in the middle got saved with few fractures. And the 5 kid who was sitting behind the driver seat was still unconscious. Kabir himself was in coma since February. At that very moment Kabir wished that he would have died too in the accident. This guilt was unbearable. He was responsible for taking 3 lives. 2 of his best friends and an unknown beggar. And one friend was movement-less too. Tears refused to stop as Kabir recalled his last day with friends. No matter whatever he would do for the redemption of this guilt it would never go. Kabir howled to make his God listen to his pain and lessen it. But this pain was asked to be gifted.
Is asking someone not to drive when he/she is under the influence of alcohol too much to ask for?
There is a reason behind every rule, we often don’t think about the consequences before breaking them.
“Look into my eyes…you’ll see, what you mean to me!”
Learning salsa has been his dream even since he saw Patrick Swayze in Dirty Dancing. He was thirteen when he watched this movie during one of school’s summer vacation. TV was not allowed to him and his elder sister as books were emphasised more by parents, but when everyone in the class was taking about this movie; how could eM stand a step back! Ever since then he knew that he would learn Salsa when he would fall in love with someone. Over the years, his passion for dance increased, but he did not take a step forward for dance. He still was waiting to find The One in his life. Few more years passed by and he still was in search for the lady of his dreams for whom he has been writing his love songs, inspiration behind his efforts towards being a poet was still stuck in the maze, he was waiting to hear the rhythm of the beating of that heart which has been with him and yet was missing.
He decided to join dance classes but not salsa. eM was sure that he’ll dance salsa with that one only. Classes began with all fun and sweat, eM loved learning new steps with all those in the batch. While rehearsing he realised that music is his better buddy than dance as there were few difficult steps which were hard to get.
And then came Valentine’s Day, he was not aware of what was coming on his way. He was on time as usual and at the beginning of the class everybody got the news that it would be a special class on the occasion of V-Day. Excitement suddenly filled the hall as everyone was waiting for ‘what’s next?’. And then the instructor announce, “Find a partner guys, we are going to learn Salsa today!!!” While everyone in the class was busy searching for a partner, eM was stunned by the sudden announcement. It took a while for him to come back and look around for a partner, by that time most pretty girls in the class were already asked for being a partner by other guys. eM slowly walked across the room to see if there is a girl or else he would be dancing with a guy. Just across few smiling faces he found out a slightly tensed face of a girl. eM walked towards her, she looked at him and smiled in apprehension agreeing to his intensions of being a partner.
He asked for her name while trying to kill the ice between them. She was Lucy, people in the batch hardly knew her. A low profile student in the class who always was struggling to match-up with the pace of the batch. eM knew that before beginning with any step he first have to make her at ease. He cracked few jokes to make her smile and with few more attempts she was comfortable. Beginning steps were taught and then music went live for the students to portray the same steps. Lucy fumbled with few steps, initially eM thought of letting her take her own time but soon realised that he would have to help her. Now from the basic steps they moved to next level. From hands now its waist and shoulders. Lucy was hesitant of putting her hands on his shoulders, eM made it a lil easy by lowering down his shoulder…eventually making her smile. eM was careful while placing his hand on her waist. “She should not feel awkward” he thought, to figure that out he looked into her eyes and there he saw something else. There was sadness in her eyes, something eM was not expecting to see. Lucy looked at him and then looked away, probably was trying to avoid the inspection through his eyes. By now they were up-to-the-mark with the batch. The next step was a ‘lift’. Guys were supposed to lift girls. While the batch was trying to replicate the instructors, Lucy said no to eM as she was sure conscious about her heavy weight. eM insisted and so she agreed, they tried but couldn’t complete the step. This left Lucy in splits at eM’s overconfidence. She kept laughing for minutes, to eM’s surprise all he could listen was her laugh in spite of the fact that the hall was echoing with the song at high volume. He stood there, smiling at her. They completed the small act on a piece of song gracefully with the batch before the class ended.
eM experienced some difficulty while writing a poem later that day, it was supposed to be included in a play by some serious theatre artists. All he remembered was Lucy’s laughter during the class. Before he could even realise, he was falling for her. It was difficult for him to wait for the next class; thankfully it was the very next day.
eM was at the venue much before the class timing in the anticipation to meet Lucy. She did not turn up even when the class started. eM was not able to concentrate on the steps that were taught in the class as he was busy recalling the laughter yesterday and kept wondering about her absence in the class. While he kept standing staring at the instructor trying to understand the step but actually finding out the reason for which she couldn’t make it to the class, suddenly the door of the audi opened and she entered with hesitation. A smile adorned his face as she came into sight. Now he was waiting for the class to get over as conversation during the class was not an option. His attention in the class was mostly towards her and less towards the steps that were taught. Once the class was over, he looked for an opportunity to talk to her.
eM: Hi Lucy!!! How are you?
Lucy (hesitatingly): ohh Hi! I am fine thanks!
eM: How come you were late in the class today?
Lucy: Slept late last night so couldn’t get up.
eM: Insomnia is a common disease these day…hahaha
Lucy however just smiled and took a leave.
eM: Lucy…wait!!
Lucy: yeah?
eM: Would you be coming in the next class??
Lucy: yes..
eM: Great!! Can I have your number?? I might not be able to attend the class next week, so would get the updates from you.
Lucy: ammm…. okay…it’s 9871****70
eM: Thanks! Wish you a nice week ahead
Lucy: Thanks and same to you
eM saw her disappear while he kept standing there. He felt a sense of accomplishment with the phone number he just bagged.
Rest of the day he kept dealing with the desperation to bring the phone number in use. “No…this would make things too obvious, I’ll wait”
In a day full of Sun’s harsh rays
I found you… showing me the way
During the times, showers were falling bad
I found you…making me smile than being sad
On the road, full of leaves in fall
I found you, sapling of hope…
…protecting me like a wall
While it snowed making everything seem white
You came as an angel…
…with your laughter you made my life bright
eM was writing all mushy stuff, that too when he was suppose to write for a separation scene. He was not able to understand this chemical reaction inside him… when he had no control over his thoughts. They again and again were going in the direction of Lucy.
Week passed by and his wait was over to see Lucy again. Though he had told her that he might not come for the class but that was just to get her number. He was at the venue, waiting for her. She did not turn up like last time. Half an hour gone, one hour…two and now the class was over. The wait was still not over and he decided to finally call her to know if everything is alright. While walking down the road towards his house he dialled the number. A faint voice answered the call, he knew that it was her and that straight line turned into a curve called smile!!
eM: Hey…you took me seriously eh?
Lucy: Excuse me? Who do you want to talk to?
eM: Oh…I am sorry! Lucy this is eM…how are you?
Lucy: Hi…I am good…how are you?
eM: yeah…better now! All well? You dint turn up today?
Lucy: eh yeah…I would not be able to join back…
eM stood at a point…he certainly was not expecting this…
eM: Whatt??? Why??? Are you alright???
Lucy: Oh yes, I’m alright…it’s just that my fiancé doesn’t approve of dancing alone…so I might join back the next batch with him.
eM: Oh…ohkay…! That’s nice and romantic (eM tried to be normal)…wh…when…when did you get engaged??
Lucy: Last weekend…remember I told the day I was late..?? There was a small function in the evening..
eM: I see….
Lucy: yeah…!
eM:  So I won’t see you around anymore in the class?
Lucy: Yea…probably till the next batch..
eM: Well…I surely did not expect to hear this…but good to know that you are settling down…take care and all the best for the new beginning…will miss you in the class…
Lucy: Thank you so much eM…I do need good wishes…Thank You! Bye and take care..
eM: Yeah…you too!
eM heard her disconnect the call, he still was not able to comprehend what he just heard. “Is that it??” he thought, “Was this I was waiting for…all these years?”. He had no answers, he thought that getting back home and chasing away all the thought by sleeping was a good idea. But even that dint help. He couldn’t sleep. Going back to the class next day was unbearable, but he had to.
He continued with the batch and completed the same with a rocking performance. The batch was terrific; the only missing element was Lucy. But it wasn’t anybody’s fault.
eM came back to his routine life for next couple of month. And then he got the news of a new batch, a new session. He was curious to join; he wanted to see Lucy’s fiancé. He got himself enrolled and to his surprise, he found out that Lucy did not join the batch. Calling her up again for this was not a great idea. He deleted her number that day to console himself that she is not around him anymore in any way.
The very next day all were suppose to find a partner for the dance. This time his partner found him. A girl next to him smiled at him asking for being a partner and he smiled back faintly. The very next moment they were partners. Memories of last batch filled his mind all over again, when he fell in Love with someone in just one class. Suddenly sadness could be seen in his eyes. Mi kept wondering as sadness was least expected.
Mi: I am sorry I couldn’t recall your name..
eM: That’s fine…there’s nothing fancy in it to remember anyways… it’s eM.
Mi: My name is Mi and I was wondering how would you look with a lil smile on your face while dancing?
A faint smile came on his face again hearing that statement…
Mi: Here you go…see…much better than the serious face 🙂
eM reciprocated with a smile…
Mi was better than eM while dancing. She was picking up steps quickly, or may be eM was still tied up with the memories.
Mi helped eM learn a few difficult steps to make them come up to the mark with the batch. eM could see her eyes on him, but he was afraid to look into her eyes now. “I don’t want the same to be repeated” he kept on repeating the same in his mind while deliberately looking at a different direction.
The act was funny as it was based on Bollywood Masala. As a gimmick, girls were suppose to lift guys in the section. eM was hesitant but Mi was confident. Mi said, “Don’t worry I won’t drop you, you anyways looked lighter than me.” Mi tried to melt the ice to bring that comfort level. They performed the lift and none of the girls could complete the same. Instructors waited for the next class to confirm if they would incorporate the lift in the act or not.
A week passes by and this time eM did not want to continue with the class but sitting at home during weekends was more depressing. He went to the session again where Mi was waiting to greet him with a smile. He did not smile back; he was busy calculating in his mind whether or not he should smile back at her. Mi was disappointed at the beginning of the class with the behaviour, however considered it to be his bad day for his bad mood.
Everybody rehearsed for the lift again. And to everybody’s surprise only Mi could complete the same, though with slightly bad finishing and transition. “This is something we can work upon, so decided Mi and eM would come in the centre for the lift and rest of you would continue with general steps” announced the instructor. eM was happy to be able to make to the centre stage. It was difficult for Mi to complete the lift and then continue with the dance till the end. But even she dint want to miss the opportunity to be at the centre of the stage. Both of them were working towards better finishing and transition as their main step was the highlight of the song. There were extra practice sessions to ensure better performance as this performance was open for public. Parents, siblings, friends and relatives could be invited.
eM was excited with the piece of performance and Mi was happy to see him excited. It was the last class of the batch before the final performance. eM still was looking away throughout the performance, when Mi finally asked him “Why?? This does trouble me. Why can’t you be normal and look at me while dancing. Everyone around us is doing the same.”
eM: Sorry, I have decided not to.
Mi: Being your partner may I know why?
eM: No…! it would be better if you just concentrate on your part than questioning me.
Mi was silent with such rude words and couldn’t stop her eyes to moist. eM did notice them but ignored.
eM wasn’t too happy with the transition in himself. He felt bad with what he did to Mi. “The girl is trying hard for both of us to perform well and look at the way I behaved with her. But then, do I want to get back to the same vicious circle?? No…” eM was evaluating his behaviour with Mi. And he hardly cared what she thought.
eM was not aware as he never noticed Mi’s eyes. They had the same affection for him as his had for Lucy. He dint realise the way she had made him feel comfortable, something similar to what he did. He ignored the change in smile and the curiosity to talk. eM was too busy with his unsuccessful past to pay attention to what was ahead on the road of life. Only if he had the eye to see those eyes, he would have realised what Love is…
On the day of performance everyone was suppose to reach the venue half an hour before the mentioned time. eM was late, the moment he entered he saw Mi running towards him. “Where have you been?? We all were so worried…”
eM just smiled and replied, “insomnia is a common cause of getting up late”. Both shared a smile and went ahead. Mi knew that eM would never look towards her while dancing and she had to deal with it anyways.
Their turn…everyone was on the stage. Lights were off, few moments of silence.
“All the best eM…our time to rock the stage…it won’t be possible without your support”
eM heard the words and smiled, for the first time someone accredited him even before the results. He never was important  to anybody…so he was amused to listen to Mi’s words. He was looking at Mi in the dark when suddenly lights went on with the music. He continued to smile and he continued to look at her face and yes, he did see that contentment in her eyes. As for the first time their eyes met, with the smiling faces.
Performance begun with hooting and claps. The lift was fantastically performed and gathered a lot of whistles from the audience which made all grin ear to ear. Their piece of act came to an end, but there was no end to the applause. “Once more” echoed the auditorium when everybody bowed and went off stage to let the emcee sooth the demanding audience.
Back stage it was all happiness with a feeling of achievement. People congratulated Mi and eM as they were the highlights of the performance, instructors came and congratulated…at last it was time for both of them to congratulate each other. They kept looking at each other, they kept smiling…none of them knew what to say…all eM could do was…open his arms for Mi to sink in.
They shared a hug to congratulate each other for a rocking end and for a new beginning!!!!
The Letter
I
Mi was not able to comprehend the way life works. It was in the middle of the night that she was sitting on her bed…. crying. When the whole world was sleeping, in the middle of the snores of her Dad she was trying to figure out why life turns her way to eM or why she sees/meets eM after every few turns of her life?
eM probably was one person on earth she loved immensely… its only that she did not get enough opportunities to express it to him. Neither was he interested in those findings. It’s been more than a decade for Mi and she still is not able to succeed in letting him go out of her mind and heart. She tried her best though and her friends helped her too, to forget eM.
It all started in adolescence, when she saw him for the first time. May be it was love at first site, cos if it had been a well decided ‘fall’; her efforts to come out of it would pay results too. Mi, in her innocent own ways tried to strike a conversation with eM many a times… to know him better and to let him meet the other side of her at the same time. Her continuous efforts were rather nagging for eM. He, the dude he was; made it very clear to Mi that she can’t force him to fall in love with her. Poor Mi, she never wanted to make it look like a ‘push’, she just wanted him to know about this weird girl who loved him like crazy, who waited for hours in the balcony just have a look at him…who would forget the world and dance if he happen to cross her way, who would just recognize eM even by his shadow, who just needed the company of eM to spend rest of her life without any demands, dreams and wishes, who would believe that all her wishes were answered if eM would happen to be in her life. She pulled herself back from his life and he made efforts too, to let her pull back. Like Mi, who would dial the number of her ‘silver lining’ without giving it a second thought during a dark/gloomy day; eM would either disconnect or ignore the call unintentionally. Mi never felt this insulted and helpless in her life as in those moments, when she thought that may be eM would pick the call up to make her smile during the bad day; his voice was enough for her. Mi kept failing in keeping him out of her mind, but eM succeeded in making her stop those efforts to be a part of his life.
Years passed by, eM initiated a conversation once…which led to a meeting too; making Mi more confused. By the time she would get a solution to this, she found herself believing that they both could be friends if not lovers. eM parted ways with her girlfriend and probably needed support of someone who would accept him the way he is. Soon Mi was informed about a new budding relationship, which came into existence even sooner. And then the vicious circle started again…of ignored calls and no responses. Mi dint complain and stopped at the cross road making him cross the road with the new found love of his life. When Mi was merely a contact number lying in his phonebook, she decided to take a step forward by ceasing all contacts and as she believed in Good-Byes, eM was informed about her decision.
And today, when she got a message from him she is not able to decide what to do. A friend asked her not to reply at all, the other asked her to behave as if she misplaced his number…Mi knew that if she followed any of it, she would be cheating to herself as for the fact it doesn’t matter if she has a saved number or not cos she remember his number by heart. Her mind instructed her to go with what friends said but heart questioned her if she could do this to him? She wondered what made him make that effort while she tried to divert the thoughts of calling him up. Sooner she surrendered and made a call which wasn’t picked; hence she left a message hoping for everything to be fine with him. There wasn’t any response as expected, but Mi was worried and prayed for things to be in place for him. As otherwise she wouldn’t have been contacted.
II
A day or two later Mi dialed up his number again with the surety of not being picked, but to her surprise it was answered. And that one voice which could bring her back from any blues said “Hello”. Mi wondered at her skills of not-being-able-to-ignore-eM but then she herself accepted the fact to her friend that she simply cannot do anything to ignore him moreover she wanted to be that one last hope for him if he happened to be in trouble. And there it was….trouble!!!!
eM played an action replay of all the events that took place during all these years of not talking and some of them were more than enough to give Mi a shock. eM lost his degree of Bachelor and was trying to be a good Master. But then difficulties confronted him and he found himself in the middle of the storm… alone. He was back from his Hell trip and was again at the verge of being a single. Mi was a little different this time as the thought of being taken for granted was troubling her. She for the fact knew that eM would never be there for her at the time of need and had an option to step back and disappear from the situation. Of course she opted for the other option of being there, with the thought that she would be ignored again anytime or may be once there is a girl in his life. But little did she know that She was the girl this time!!!!
Soon after this call they met and Mi was made to feel better by acknowledging each of her feeling. She was surprised but was happy to hear that. Soon the first meeting turned into second and the second into third and so on…
Though things were pacing up between the two, Mi made sure not to expect anything out of it cos she never trusted her stars. It was 14th Feb…The Valentine’s Day when she found out that a place has been reserved for her in her favorite restaurant for Lunch. She happened to reach on time to find eM waiting for her already. Though they dint say anything to each other about how they felt…though there were no gifts exchanged to make a mark of V-Day…though there were no questions, one thing was clear that Mi was the happiest person on earth and was thanking her stars for bringing eM back in her life.
III
Half a year went by and it was Mi’s birthday. eM did not wish her yet. “It must have skipped out of his mind in the midst of all office work.”, she thought to herself and smiled with the thought of punishment that she has decided to offer him. She was getting ready for the day. She wasn’t used to this attire at all…so she was wondering if eM would like it. But then, the Tom Boy she is; the salwar-kameez today would definitely be like a good change for her special day. She wore a pink Patiala salwar with white kameez, she adorned herself with some light ethnic jewellery and kohl for her eyes. Indian attire was eM’s favorite, with those blonde looks Mi took a risk of experimenting with it and looked beautiful. She drove off to his office with a bunch of Red Carnations at the back seat. She parked the car and before she could come out, she noticed him in the rear view mirror with some stuff…trying to open his car door. She got out quickly and opened the door for him. eM was taken aback with her presence and told her that he was thinking of meeting her in the evening as he had something important to talk about. Mi knew what that important ‘something’ was and gave him that look to relax. Before she could move back to her car to bring that bunch of red carnations she found someone standing next to her looking at both eM and Mi with a shock. It was eM’s wife Lucy, staring at Mi with those degrading looks. Lucy was about to say something when eM interrupted, “Lucy…you know Mi right?? She is here to collect the payment cheque of her dance troupe, which performed at our annual office meet. That’s how I got to meet her after a long time” and he smiled at both of them. He handed over an envelope to Mi, saying that it has the cheque. “Catch ya later Mi, we have a flight to catch in few hours…going for a much needed vacation you know after a prolonged fight”, he winked at Lucy with a smile who responded by hugging him tight with a peck on his lips. Mi was not able to collect all that was happening in front of her…she had no clue about the humiliating way Lucy looked at her…she had no clue how Lucy came in picture….she had no clue if it was a dream or a reality!!!
The couple said bye to Mi and went off…Mi did notice the smirk on Lucy’s face while she turned her back at Mi along with her Husband. Mi slowly dragged herself to her car, where she found the Red Carnations at the back seat. She pulled the bunch out and kept it at the space eM’s car was parked. She then noticed the envelope in her hand that eM gave. It had something other than a cheque…she took that off. It was a letter, eM’s letter…
Dear Mi,
I don’t know if I have the courage to admit this to you or not…that’s the reason I am taking shelter of this letter.
All these months spent with you were delightful and would always be fresh in my memory. You are a lovely girl and I still wonder how can you love someone selfish, ignorant, and arrogant like me? But you do…and if you think I don’t know about it then let me tell you that I do. I appreciate each and every effort that you made in last few months as every effort made Lucy come closer to me. As you know me and Lucy had a big fight, Lucy went to her parents place after that and was not ready to come back. I made every possible effort but nothing changed. Then I tried to make her feel jealous by being with you, as I knew there would be someone giving her all updates about me. So, if I spend time with you she would get the news that I am spending time with a girl. She would feel insecure and might give me another chance if she loves me…which I was sure she does.
Now as she is back in my life, I might not be able to spend the same amount of time with you as I used to…infact I might not be able to keep in touch much…you know how girls and their insecurities are…She is no different, infact is steps ahead of many…hope you understand sweety! : )
Thank You for being there in my life when I did not have the courage to reach out to anyone else. I am sorry for not informing you about this as I thought you might disagree to play this act to bring her back…and you were my only hope…
I hope you would forget me for this…you are a sweetheart I know…
Take Care and Thanks a tonn,
eM
Mi wondered whether she should be happy or sad about this certificate of her efforts which apparently was her first gift on her 30th Birthday…
Its Not Just About Giving Birth To A Child..
eM was in a meeting when he disconnected a call. Call came again and again it was disconnected. “Someone’s really desperate to talk” he thought, as the call came again. This time he picked it up. It was the Principal on the line, telling him that his wife failed to pick the children up and they have been sitting in the school-yard for over 2 hours. eM panicked and left the meeting in between. He tried Mi’s number it was switched off. He rushed to school. Within an hour he was at the school gate, he went inside and saw both of them sobbing. When they saw him, they came running to hug their father. They cried harder this time, it was difficult for him to calm them down. Lucy was 9 and Luke was just 7, the word ‘ice-cream’ did wonders to calm them down. eM apologized to the Principal and took a leave. On their way back home, eM bought them their favorite ice-cream flavors. Lucy and Luke were totally opposite, Luke loved chocolate…hated vanilla whereas Lucy hated chocolate and always had vanilla. They now looked normal, shouting and fighting with each other. But eM was still worried….about Mi, who has never been so irresponsible before…how could she do this to their children??? With these thoughts playing kung-fu in his mind, he pulled up their car in the parking lot of the society. Children ran towards the elevator. Luke knew that he would not be able to press that elevator button as he is not as tall as his sister, but then he would not step back in giving competition to her. Lucy would flaunt her superiority of being able to reach to that button, so what if she had to jump and try 2-3 times!!! By the time their father came the elevator was their. Lucy entered the elevator with so much of excitement, she always did… as if its the first time she saw that machine or would never be able to see that again. On the other hand Luke suddenly turned into a ‘rockstar’ with his constant hi-pitch rhythmic talks. eM smiled at both of them, Thanking God for sending these two angels in his life.
Elevator stopped at the eleventh floor, where their apartment was. eM found that the door was already open. They entered the house to find Mi having a discussion with an Advocate about divorce. Jack, Mi’s boyfriend; was also their. Mi and advocate were sipping coffee in the hall and Jack was in the balcony adjacent to the hall…smoking a cigar. Mi must have realized what she forgot, as eM caught her looking at the wall clock; but there was no regret on her face. She continued with her discussions, ignoring the greetings of her children. eM ofcourse was furious…fuming with anger. Just one more thing and it would break it all. Children after being ignored by their mother started fighting to seek her attention. Luke was a step ahead of Lucy in these kind of fights, Lucy’s long golden hair were easy to grab and pull. Luke did the same, making Lucy scream for her mom’s help. Mi came running to Lucy, only to slap her and to remind her of elder ones’ responsibilities. This was more than enough for the volcano to erupt in eM’s mind. The couple started shouting at each other. eM told Mi how irresponsible she is and that she don’t deserve to be a mother. Mi told her that she was sick n tired of everything…that she made a mistake by marrying him and then by conceiving twice. Advocate interrupted their argument by telling her that he has another appointment and would have to leave. Jack offered to drop him off and told Mi that he would come back in an hour. As soon as they closed the door behind them the verbal fight continued with more and more abusive words. Lucy and Luke were sitting on the couch, still in their school uniform; trying to comprehend what was happening in front of them. Though it wasn’t new to them, but every time it happened it forced them to change. In the past couple of years Lucy’s teachers have been a witness how this bright active girl turned into an introvert, she started stammering and cried on stage. They all wanted to know what was happening to her. Luke on the other hand was not very bright, he was more into playing Baseball but off-late he had stopped playing, would rather just sit down in the stands and watch others play. He sometimes was found crying.
Today was not like previous days, Lucy knew what divorce meant she learned it from a TV show. She started crying, watching her sister cry…Luke followed. Verbal and abusive fight soon turned physical. Mi turned to the kids and accused them of being jinxed. As per her, they were a bad luck. Mi kept shouting even when she was pulled away by eM. They were fighting in the kitchen now. Mi slapped eM and pushed him, making his head bang the sink tap. eM could only see a butcher knife now, he grabbed it and moved towards Mi. After a few minutes of running around, when he was about to stab her; he heard Luke’s shout. They both turned towards the voice, Luke was in the balcony leaning forward. Both ran to catch him and pulled him back. It took a while for them to realize that Lucy had jumped off from the balcony of their 11th floor apartment. Her tiny body was lying in the pool of blood.
The poor soul couldn’t think of any other option to save her mom from the anger of her dad or may be she thought that life after that event would not be worth living.
Whatever it was…we can only make assumptions now. Do you think eM and Mi would have stopped fighting after this? Did they finally get a divorce? What must have happened to Luke?
There wasn’t any scope of improvement in eM and Mi’s relationship. They got the divorce, eM dint find it worth fighting for after Lucy’s death. Mi got married to Jack, whom she caught cheating not just once or twice but at many occasions. Every time it was a different female. She eventually divorced him too and lived alone thereafter. And for Luke, nothing was ever the same for him. He lived with his father and continued to visit different psychiatrists from the age of 7 till eternity. He stopped taking elevators, they reminded him of her sister who committed suicide cos of those two people whom they loved the most.
Domestic Violence harms in many ways…more than what one can comprehend. Think about your children before fighting in front of them. No matter how old they are, they can never take it. Choosing between parents is not what they live for…
Chocolate Cake
choco cake
It was the Birthday of someone whom she used to share her secrets with. Mi’s office friend turned 25. They were celebrating her Birthday in the same way they used to celebrate for everyone. Cake was ordered and they were all set for her cake facial. Yeah, that’s how they ‘celebrated’. Once the cake was set aside on a table, Mi was asking for the person who ordered the Cake. It was the Third time in a row that they had ordered a chocolate cake and Mi (being an Alien) hated chocolate. She was furious because it would be the Third time that she would just watch everyone eat that yummy thing.
Rest of the day she kept cribbing about it.
Finally the day ended and she was looking forward to a nice evening with her family. As soon as she reached home she found out that there was a bunch of fresh carnations that eM has sent for her. She was all excited. And then she discovered that there was a chocolate cake along with it maintaining it’s cool in the refrigerator. “Wow!!!” she thought and went ahead to have a piece for herself. Her joy knew no bounds as for the first time that bitter chocolate felt so sweet. She bought another chocolate cake for her family, who would be tempted to eat it too; to make sure that she doesn’t have to share the one sent for her.
Rest of the day she kept smiling at the carnations.
Sorry, I Missed Your Call
I just thought of making a story out of a thought. My first attempt at story writing. Mi and eM are the two characters I am gonna write about. I do have different stories that I want to write, the character’s name would remain the same, though the characteristics, locations, situations etc. might change. Mi is a girl and eM is a guy (of course!!).
———————————————————
She just came back home after a long day at work. Lying on her bed thinking about the day and taking some rest she thought of calling him up as it’s been more than a month that they have spoken to each other. She dint think twice and picked up her phone. Opened up the contact list to enter 2 alphabets – e and m and there it was, his name – eM. “Fingers automatically find that green button on the phone whenever these 2 letters appear on my cell”, she smiled while saying this to herself. Here it goes – tring tring on the other side, she anxiously waited to hear the voice say ‘”Hello” at the other end. He dint pick up. She wasn’t too happy. “And that’s why I always avoid that green button”, she told herself. Thinking about why she calls him up and why he doesn’t answer her call, she fell asleep to take a short nap.
He saw that he missed a call. It was Mi. He wasn’t expecting her call at this hour when she knew that he would be in the office and would be busy. But he dint realize that because of the difference in the time zones she actually doesn’t know what the right time to call him is. Anyway, he did send a message to her out of courtesy.
A sudden vibration of her cell phone woke her up, indicating a received SMS. She opened it up to see it was eM, “Sorry, I missed your call. Sup? How are you?” She dint reply, she knew that its better to be quite instead of spoiling somebody’s day with a sarcastic comment; that too at the beginning of it. She thought of some nice replies but they were really not coming in her mind.
eM never realized what’s there in Mi’s mind or he never bothered to know. Mi was dealing with some problems in her life, she was already suffering from the syndrome of thinking too much about everything in her life. Due to which she mostly was not in the best of her moods. eM was probably the only one in her life at that point of time whom she wanted to talk to. As this would give her an opportunity to think about something nice.
His phone rang again and again he couldn’t pick up. It was again the time that he never expected a call from her. He again chose to message and there was no reply from her again. It was US Independence Day all he could see outside was Blue, Red and White. No kites as it used to be back home but balloons. Their all sort of conversations stopped after that. Even when eM mailed her, she dint reply. He message her once again only to find no reply from her. And then he got too busy with life and work to realize her absence.
After some time eM celebrated his Birthday. His phone kept ringing throughout, SMSs were coming in wishing him good luck, and inbox was filled with birthday wishes. It was after some days that he realized that he did not receive any communication from Mi. Forgetting his birthday is out of question as she is someone with sharp memory when it comes to eM. He thought of not thinking about it too much but it wasn’t real. “Mi is someone who doesn’t think much before doing what her heart says” he found himself thinking again. He was actually right, Mi never thought of the consequences when it came to the matters of heart. And he knew that at any cost it couldn’t have been possible that her heart refused to wish him on his Birthday. “Not even a mail???” he thought again before he decided to call her up.
He was a bit hesitant of calling her up but then he wanted to know what happened. The phone rang, it was the same old dialer tone. “She dint change it… that too for this long??”.
“Hello”, a faint voice picked up the phone.
It’s not Mi for sure, she can’t be this faint after knowing that it’s my call. She can be happy or or angry but not this faint. “May I talk to Mi?”, he spoke after thinking for a while.
“Who is this?”, she sounded surprised.
“It’s her friend eM”
“Oh yes… eM. I am sorry but you wont be able to talk to her now. She is no more”. And he could hear her weep over the phone as he lay silent recollecting of what he just heard.
“What??? When??”
“It was 4th of July that she spoke last”
He disconnected the phone without asking anything further.
He actually missed her Call that day.
